Organizations we have supported in other years

Sharks are one of my favorite animals. Sharks are terribly misunderstood animals, and few people realize just how important they are to keeping ocean ecosystems in balance. That's why I'm endorsing Fins Attached for 2017. Fins Attached is dedicated to preserving and studying the ocean's ecosystems, and they believe the best place to start in accomplishing that goal is to protect sharks. Fins Attached actively works to end the cruel practice of shark finning and to change misconceptions about sharks through education, conservation, advocacy and research. They often have volunteer research trips, and they have all kinds of ways for you to get involved in the fight to save sharks. And get this: they're based in Colorado Springs, CO! They're the perfect example of how anyone can make a difference no matter how far from the ocean you are. Look 'em up! www.finsattached.org

Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center

Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center Mission Statement:

Our mission is to inspire an understanding of the natural world and ourselves as part of it – past, present and future. It is our hope that through DPNC and Coogan Farm that we will help our visitors foster a personal environmental ethic.

I have been visiting DPNC every year for well over 40 years. They offer the Nature lover a safe haven to explore, learn, and just be one with the Earth and Her creatures. They're located in Mystic Connecticut, a town that time thankfully forgot, and I mean that in a good way. Mystic has remained quaint, welcoming and safe, which allows hundreds of tourists a year, especially children, the opportunity to be out in Nature and to observe wildlife up close.

DPNC is a teaching center and an animal rehab facility. I so enjoy watching the youngsters who attend classes there...they are taught to love the environment and cherish all creatures. Instead of stepping on a bug which many children are inclined to do, they are literally given hands on opportunities to interact with these and many creatures, to hold them, study their habits, understand their place in our ecosystem and their importance to the survival of our planet. It's a joy to watch them learn and grow. They have acres of woodland paths to explore, ponds to observe animals such as turtles, snakes and frogs in their natural habitat, and hands on experience with the many raptors and various woodland creatures rehabbing at DPNC.

This wonderful teaching facility has, over the decades, taught thousands of children to be stewards of our planet and protectors of Her many creatures. It is a place very close to my heart.

“We are a global community conservation organization that advances the vision and work of Dr. JaneGoodall. By protecting chimpanzees and inspiring people to conserve the natural world we all share, we improve the lives of people, animals and the environment. Everything is connected—everyone can make a difference.”

Jane Goodall has been an influence on my life for a very long time! It was her work with primates that led me to a degree in anthropology ... it was working with her on a symposium years ago that helped me understand the depth of her concern and passion for a world that works ... and it is her current encouragement that we all need to make a positive difference in this world that helped me see that Taproot Guru was going to be my way of making that difference.

How could I choose anything but the Jane Goodall Institute for my supported non-profit? This organization has grown from a focused concern for chimpanzees to highlighting world environmental needs and providing educational leadership with their global Roots and Shoots programs. She has become a voice for all conservation concerns. Please help me support her vision for a peaceful world that works for all living things. www.janegoodall.org
